Ann has worked with edible fungi for the last 20 years. Mainly looking at wood decomposers and mycorrhizal fungi with the main focus on the commercial viability of small scale production in rural settings.
She has an academic background in Research Microbiology, Mycology and Ecology. She is a Member of the Institute of Biology, Member of the Institute of Mycology and a Chartered Biologist. She is also a Member of the Association of British Fungus Groups and the Non-timber Forest Products group.
Ann has carried out considerable research in the commercial growing of mushroom spawn and trialling strains of edible fungi in woodland environments through out Europe. The initial work was carried out in conjunction with Highland Birchwoods and Aberdeen University. In 2000 she help design and co-ordinate a show garden at the RHS Chelsea flower show with the British Mycological Society (BMS) which won a Gold Medal, Further Golds were achieved at the BBC gardening show at the NEC Birmingham 2000, RHS Chelsea 2004 and RHS Tatton Park 2005.
Ann heads Ann Miller’s Speciality Mushrooms Ltd supplying mushroom spawn, growing resources and educational material to gardeners and small scale growers through on Europe. Her consultancy work has included Shiitake mushroom growing with Stirling Mushrooms and Glasgow University for Cancer Research and advising on the fungal biodiversity within the Eden Project Bio dome. Ann supplied fruiting Shiitake logs to Clarence House as part of the Start Sustainable Festival hosted by the Prince of Wales in 2011. In 2012 she was invited to the 18th International Edible Mushroom Convention in Bejjing China and in 2013 was consultant to the Manchester International Festival Biospheric Project growing Oyster mushrooms on coffee.
She has worked with and supported the BMS UK Fungus Day for the last 4 years, and is currently on the BMS out reach committee.
